Lucca was a German Shepherd x Belgian Malinois in the United States Marine Corps.
Six years of service. Two deployments to Iraq. One to Afghanistan. Over 400 missions detecting explosives.
Not a single human fatality on her watch.
In 2012, an IED blast in Afghanistan cost her a front leg. She recovered, retired, and went home with her handler, Gunnery Sergeant Chris Willingham.
In 2016, she was awarded the Dickin Medal. The animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross. The first U.S. Marine Corps dog ever to receive it.
She also received an unofficial Purple Heart, presented by a two-time Marine recipient of the award.
Lucca is interred at the Michigan War Dog Memorial in South Lyon, Michigan.
